Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson

Increasingly complicated. I enjoyed the essence of the story, and Sanderson always picks out potent threads of humanity and grace. It's so beautiful to see the characters learn and grow, but the twist left me scratching my head. I'm taking away the scattered pearls of wisdom and leaving the confusion.
Part of the Cosmere (if you haven't heard of this, you'll need at least a day to read up).
