The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien

It's interesting that our 'big bad' is more akin to a source of poison than a charismatic leader of atrocities - (as opposed to many other books). I also found it quietly significant that the destruction of Sauron was brought about by his own designs.
But am I the only one who finds it hard to imagine how Middle Earth would continue with any real meaning past the Third Age?
