Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler

Both plot and setting baffled me - I never truly understood the culture or history of the place or believed in the characters' motivations. Aspects which could have been unusual felt gimmicky and contrived. Only one character showed any development.
In short:
If you want a solid sci-fi setting, read Brandon Sanderson
If you want natural same-sex relationships, read Melissa Caruso
If you want character development, read Trudi Canavan
If you want perfect magic, read Garth Nix
If you want flawed personalities, read Robin Hobb
This book doesn't really deliver in any of these areas.
Warning: profanity
