The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty
The politics needed a more assured writer; the contradictions made things feel dry, complicated and frustrating instead of intriguing. It was hard to get emotionally involved in the characters as I rarely understood their motivations. It had all the elements of a different story I wanted.
