The Left-handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix
Fresh setting and characters, but lots of explanations. One of those novels whose characters spend all of the first novel running away from 'they know not what'. Conversations recapitulating recent action made it longer and more repetitive than it needed to be.
My advice: read Sabriel.
