The Faithless Hawk by Margaret Owen
Each one of Owen's books is about so much more than the story. Her use of theme is incredible. Plus, I've never read anyone who can write conflict and threat so well. Her characters are always against the odds and have to make truly agonising choices. Every character changes - even me.
