I'm not really a fan of books which bounce you around characters, cities and worlds. (I also prefer past tense writing). The plot wasn't clear enough for me to care about the characters. I've now read a few books in this style - it's reminds me of a travelogue, interspersed with random fables and angsty families. All in all, not for me.
