JE Apr'24 "Laughable hot mess" [12]

House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas

I liked the jumble of friends from different races - it was cute how they formed a gang of sorts. I disliked... pretty much everything else. A sprawling plot(?) interspersed with glorified sex, lazy writing (repetitive hyperbole and swearing), illogical reveals and the length! Glad I tried it, but I need books with plot.

And here's the rant: why is every single 'person' in this book sexualised?! Everyone is drooled over for having perfect abs, a gorgeous ass, high cheekbones, long legs, full lips etc. It grows increasingly disgusting and demeaning. Topping it all off is Bryce ("It's Bryce. Everyone has a thing for her.") - the sexy, hilarious, sly, irreverent, powerful, compassionate, gifted, sassy, queen-like etc. etc. female who everyone wants in bed. She transcends every boundary this world has, particularly physically. Why does everyone find her attractive? And then she has a 'mate' who is like a sex god. I get that it's daydream writing, but why does that require physical perfection? Readers are going to be pretty disappointed when they encounter real life - and real sex.
