The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova
The cultural backdrop to the story elevates this book from mediocre to good. I enjoyed the clash of perspectives, but still felt there wasn't enough on-page character development. Magic isn't really a substitute for good old conversation and thought processes. Some epic action sequences, though.
