Conflict is done really well in this book - there's lots going on. I liked the two main characters, but wanted more depth. The magic system needs work as well... I found the issue with the commander a little ridiculous, but enjoyed the book's climax. Serious warning of a very harrowing scene mid-book!

Major warning: The book contains a violent rape scene. It's not overly graphic, but the manner in which it is carried out encompasses emotional, mental and physical torture. It's a very hard read.
