It's a weird one as this book takes place simultaneously with The Traitor Queen so major plot points are already known. That makes the story's success depend on the romance, characterisation and politics. The romance is mainly tragic devotion and lust. Character development happens in fits and starts, but the politics were interesting. I'm intrigued how Kerris will save his bankrupt country and whether Lara gets involved in the next book.
